The Filipinas Heritage Library is a specialized research library in the country that commits to preserving and upholding the pride of Philippine arts, culture, and history. It has found its permanent home at the Ayala Museum building in De La Rosa Street, Makati City, since 2013. The Ayala Foundation’s Arts and Culture Division comprises both the Library and the Museum.
Evolution of a Modern Library
During the early 1990s, plans by Ayala Land to develop the Triangle in Makati were presented. However, Ayala Corporation’s Chairman, Jaime Zobel de Ayala, wanted to preserve the Neilson Tower, which was a significant landmark being the oldest pre-war structure remaining in the district.
In January 1994, the decision to put up a specialized Filipiniana library in Neilson Tower was finalized. Aside from the historical and architectural importance, it was accessible and conducive for public use. The Filipinas Heritage Library was finally opened on April 23, 1996, and inaugurated on August 23.
The Nielson Tower facility provided spaces for various activities like book launchings, lectures, workshops, training, concerts, and private and corporate functions. These have contributed to making the Library a venue for promoting the Philippine legacy.
The Library has developed from offering traditional library research services to become a comprehensive electronic research center, taking advantage of today’s modern information technology. The Filipinas Heritage Library’s extensive catalog and collections can now be accessed online.
Cultivating Philippine Heritage Through Generations
The Filipinas Heritage Library well represents the documentary and highlights the country’s formative period as a nation from the 1930s to the 1950s. The collections are open for visitors on the sixth floor of the Ayala Museum complex. Philippine history and culture enthusiasts and researchers can also access the online catalogs. Guests can also take advantage of scheduled public programs such as exhibitions, lectures, and educational activities.
The founding of the Library contributed much to raising awareness of preserving and cultivating the study of Philippine heritage and the importance of passing it to the next generation. It is truly an institution promoting Philippine pride and inspiration.
